Kathy (Strank) Kasper is the niece of Sgt. Michael Strank, USMC one of the six men who raised the flag at Iwo Jima. In his book "Flags of Our Fathers", James Bradley details the lives of the 5 Marines and Bradley's dad, John, a Navy corpsman and the “story behind the immortal photograph that has come to symbolize the courage and indomitable will of America”. Sgt. Strank was killed on Iwo Jima a week after the flag raising, he was 25. That photo is the basis for the U.S. Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington, VA and a proud symbol of the U.S. Marines.
